A strong feature of our program is the industrial internship, which combines relevant job experience with your classroom studies. Students work with practicing engineers, often designing and building real products which are then manufactured. This experience is invaluable, since it demonstrates the relationship between theory and practice and often leads to a permanent position in the company. Co-op is often described as "the ultimate job interview". Your first co-op term starts in your second year, so you can see first-hand what types of work real engineers do. Throughout the rest of your studies at SFU, work and study terms alternate at four-month intervals. Eight month internships can be arranged in certain cases. Placements are made in BC, throughout Canada and even abroad, with some students finding work as far away as Germany, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea. Internship salaries are good and approach those of graduating engineers by the end of the program, allowing you to fund most of your education 'on the fly'.
