ENSC E-MAIL LISTS PRIMER

Mailing lists may be either of two types depending on which mail server is used.

Uses the ACS Mail Server and all addresses end in @sfu.ca

Example:ensc-ucc@sfu.ca

Uses the FASnet Mail Server and all addresses end in @ensc.sfu.ca

Example: ensc-faculty@ensc.sfu.ca

ENSC makes use of both ACS and FASnet Mail Servers.

Allow members of the department to send a message to a group within the department and the address will depend upon whether the list resides on the ACS or the FASnet Mail Server. Maintenance of departmental lists is the responsibility of General Office Staff. Whether the lists resides on the ACS or CSS system depends on the whim of the General Office staff member maintaining the list.

Example: ensc-faculty@cs.sfu.ca is a FASnet Mail Alias on the FASnet Mail Server

Note: General Office staff update the FASnet lists by sending an email message to gripe@cs.sfu.ca only FAS NSG staff can update these lists at the request of the General Office Staff member who maintains the list.

Example: ensc-ucc@sfu.ca is an ACS Maillist on the ACS Mail Server

Allow faculty to send a message to students registered in a course. These are always on the ACS Mail Server and are special kind of ACS Maillists called Courselists. Maintenance of Courselists is the responsibility of the faculty member teaching the course; although, in some cases, where an individual faculty member has requested it be so, some courselists are temporarily owned by the Undergrad Secretary.

Courselists automatically contain the addresses of registered students.

The owner or manager of the Courselist can manually add other recipients e.g. TAs.

Example of a courselist: ensc-204@sfu.ca

The owner of the courselist is responsible for maintenance of the list.
