ENSC 834-3: Fundamentals of Optical Communication

Course Description

This course discusses modern fibre optics communication systems. The major topics to be covered are as follows: the analysis of optical transmission media, including multimode and single mode technology; bandwidth limitations imposed by dispersive behaviour of fibre; modified fibre profiles for third generation fibre communication systems; solitons; semiconductor laser diodes; external modulation; PIN photo-diodes and avalanche photo-detectors; bandwidth and noise limitations; optical receiver and transmitter circuits; quantum-limited receiver performance; BER performance; PER performance; optical communication networks.

Prerequisites

Students wishing to take this course must have the permission of the instructor.
