The URL hires research associates to help with
projects. The qualifications required depend upon the project. Typically,
research associates are given responsibility for a task and are required to
help supervise students.
Post Doctoral Fellows are employed in the same
capacity as research associates but with the aim of furthering their training
in research and supervising research.
Graduate students in the URL work under the
supervision of an expert from industry, a faculty member at SFU or both. A
potential student should have a strong mathematics background as well as proven
abilities in one or more of the following: hardware design, signal processing,
statistical signal processing, or physics. In addition the student should have
an interest in exploring the possibility of a career in ocean-related
engineering and sciences. It is important that URL graduate students be
self-motivated, able to work independently and have good communication skills.
Undergraduate students are engaged in various
subprojects for undergraduate thesis work, project courses, or co-op work terms.
There are projects available that are suitable for students from first year
engineering to graduation.
Funding: Please note that the URL is funded
by research grants obtained from government agencies and industrial
partners. Therefore, the number of
funded positions available at any particular time is dependent on the grants
held at that time. A few non-funded
position are available for those students capable of providing their own funding
through personal resources or teaching assistant positions.
