WECC '96 - A Voyage of Discovery

Matt Gierc
Head Delegate

WECC, The Western Engineering Competition Competiton, was held this year in the frozen wasteland of Regina. And I mean that quite literally, Regina was during one morning, the coldest place on the planet. Of course it would be this cold on my first trip there.

At the conference, I was (volunteered, elected, suckered?) into becoming the head delegate for Simon Fraser University. At WECC, we needed to exchange meal coupons for our dinners in the hotel. Being the head delegate entailed picking up the meal tickets for everyone, handing them out to my group, going back to pick up extra meal tickets for the people who lost theirs, handing the extras out again, and so on.

I also discovered that even though I was our head delegate, I was still considered a "stupid frosh." Even though I had already completed a year of University before coming into engineering, I could not escape the stigma of being a lower class person. I felt that I couldn't even express my opinion just because of the fact that no one would respect my ideas. The lack of this first year disrespect here at SFU really makes this program one of the best.

Being a head delegate also brought a sense of responsibility to me. So when I heard of an engineer that had been sent to the hospital with a bloody face, I knew that it had to be one of ours. I waited in the hotel lobby with Paul until 4 in the morning, thinking that we were waiting in concern of our comrade. I was shocked to find out that we were waiting just to have a good laugh on his expense. In my state of absolute horror, I ran to my room to grab my camera and immortalize Ted. I think the pictures almost do his face justice.

In spite of the fact that Chris and I came in last in the debate competition, and the fact that Mark managed to make it to my bathroom, thereby completing his quest to visit every SFU hotel room but his own, WECC was a fun time. My $75 ticket was well spent.
