<li>All honors students should take ENSC 440 in Semester 7 instead of ENSC 340.  ENSC 340-4 to be withdrawn from the calendar. (Passed by SCUS, March 07, 2006)
<li>ENSC 428 title and prerequisite changes: from Data Communications/ Prerequisite: ENSC 327 and ENSC 351 or 385. to Digital Communications/ Prerequisite: ENSC 327. (Passed by FASUCC, February 02, 2006)
<li>ENSC 429 prerequisite update: from Prerequisite: ENSC 281 or 380 or 382, and 327 to Prerequisite: ENSC 327 or 328, and 380. (Passed by SCUS, Dec 12, 2005)
<li>Co-op course title changes: ENSC 195, 295 and 395 change from Job Practicum I, III, and V to Industrial Internship I, II and III. ENSC 196, 296 and 396 change from Job Practicum II, IV and VI to Special Internship I, II, and III. (Passed by SCUS, Feb 07, 2006)
<li>Commencing Fall 2005 you must take ENSC Math 254 in the Summer semester.
Engineering students will no longer be able to take Math 252 instead of Math 254.

The following curriculum changes were recently approved by the Senate and will appear in the 2005/2006 calendar.

<ul>

<li>New Course - ENSC 224 Electronics Devices. This will be a required course for the 2005-3 (and subsequent) intake majoring in the Electronics option and the Computer Option. The course replaces a technical elective in the Electronics option and a science elective in the Computer option. 

<li>Pre-requisite change to ENSC 450 - the existing pre-requisite requirements will be changed to ENSC 225 and ENSC 350, effective 2005-3.

<li>Schedule change to ENSC 201 - the course will be moved from Semester 4 to Semester 8 for the 2005-3 (and subsequent) intake. It will still be offered in 2006-2 but after that, it may be a couple of years before it is offered again. We will make another announcement once the plans are firmed up.

<li>Schedule change to Math 232 - The 2005-3 (and subsequent) intake are required to take Math 232 in Semester 2. 

<li>Course Replacement - Math 252 Vector Calculus will be replaced by the new course Math 254 Vector and Complex Analysis for Applied Sciences. 

<li>Biomedical Engineering Option - A new Biomedical Engineering option will be introduced in 2005-3. Please contact <a href="mailto:rawicz@sfu.ca">Prof. Andrew Rawicz</a> for details.

<li>MATH 254 will replaced MATH 252 in the Engineering Science curriculum starting Summer 2005.

<li>Transfer students, and others, should note that MATH 157 is not an acceptable substitute for MATH 151. 

<li>First year students may now take either PHYS 120/121 or PHYS 125/126 in Fall 2004/Spring 2005

<li><a href="double.html">Double Offerings</a> of select Engineering courses for Fall 2004

<li>  ENSC 151 will be offered in both Spring and Summer semesters in 2004.

        <li>  Effective September 1, 2002, the 

    Engineering Science Program has undergone a major change. See the <a href="http://www.reg.sfu.ca/calendar/U%20Applied%20Science4.html#1002962">SFU 

    Calendar</a> for details of the new program. The key new aspects of the program 

    are as follows: 

    <ul>

      <li> The program is split into two streams: B.A.Sc. (Honours) and B.A.Sc. 

      <li> Students must maintain both a CGPA and a UDGPA greater than or equal 

        to 3.0 to stay in the honours stream. Honours students take a project 

        course (ENSC 340-4) in their third year and undertake a Bachelor's thesis 

        in their final year. 

      <li> Students must maintain both a CGPA and a UDGPA greater than or equal 

        to 2.4 to stay in the general stream. These students take a capstone project 

        course in their final year (ENSC 440-4). 

      <li> Engineering Physics option is an honours only option. All other options 

        have honours/general choice. 

      <li> One science elective has been dropped from all options except Engineering Physics.

<li>

     Students who have taken ENSC 340 and subsequently fall below the 3.00

     GPA required for the Honours BASc degree and opt for the general

     stream, will be required to take a specific version of ENSC 494 that

     will be run concurrently with ENSC 440.

     <p>

</ul>


  <li>  It is a policy withnin Applied Sciences (adhered to by ENSC) 

      that no midterms or finals are to be held during the last week of classes.

      <p>

  <li> As of 99-1, students who  have taken ENSC 427-4 may not

      subsequently take CMPT 371-3 (as a technical or a computing elective). 

      The restriction applies one way only. The other way is fine, i.e.,

      if you take CMPT 371-3 before taking ENSC 427, you may still 

      count it toward your technical or computing elective. A main rationale is 

      that ENSC 427 is a more quantitative/advanced course.

      <p>

  <li> I have had inquiries from some 2nd year students (in 97-2) about switching to

      the new calendar. This is possible; however, you won't get credit for

      all of your courses. For example, ENSC 125-5 will "transfer" as ENSC

      220-3, while ENSC 222-5 will transfer into ENSC 225-4. You will also

      have to take ENSC 151-2 in the Spring.

      <p>

  <li> Although some substitutions are possible in the curriculum, requests

      to fill a 4-credit requirement with a 3-credit course will not be

      granted.

      <p>

  <li> Students who do well in high-school IB Physics normally get transfer

      credit for PHYS 101 and PHYS 102. In these cases, Engineering will

      waive the requirement for PHYS 120; however, PHYS 121 must still be

      taken. Once you have taken PHYS 121, it will count as a "duplicate"

      of PHYS 102 and you will effectively lose your transfer credit for

      this course. Students with IB Physics transfers will be allowed into

      PHYS 121 (this has been approved by Simon Watkins, the undergraduate

      Chair in Physics).  <p>

  <li>Students entering Engineering with "Advanced Standing" (but no

      transfer credit) in CHEM 102 have permission to replace their

      CHEM 102 requirement by an alternate Science elective from the

      <a href="/undergrad/courses/electives/science.html">

      pre-approved list</a>. Credit for CHEM 115 will not be given to those

      students with AP ot IB Chemisty unless this is approved by the

      Chemistry Department.

      <p>

  <li>Students entering Engineering in 97-3 without Computing-12 in high

      schools have permission from the CMPT Undergraduate Chair to take

      CMPT 101 without having to take CMPT 098 first PROVIDED that they

      score a B or better in ENSC 150 (you should, however, arrange your

      waiver with the Computer Science DA well before the Spring

      registration).  Note, however, that it is the opinion of Computing

      Science that CMPT 098 is still recommended and you will not be

      allowed to withdraw from CMPT 101 under extenuating circumstances if

      you find the course too difficult.

      <p>

      If you don't have Computing-12 and want to be safe, it is best to

      take CMPT 098 in 97-3 instead of CHEM 115. Going the ENSC 150 route

      will cause extra complications if you fail to get a B, since you will

      then get behind in the Computing sequence.

      <p>

  <li> Those students following an

  old calendar have permission to substitute any approved Science

  elective for their CHEM 103 requirment.

      <p>

  <li> 

   CMPT 105 and CMPT 290 will be offered for the last time in 97-2 and 98-1

   respectively. These courses are being replaced by ENSC/CMPT 150-3 and

   ENSC/CMPT 250-3, which will be offered in the Fall and Spring

   (at a minimum - I expect that both of these course will be offered

   several times per year). In addition, CMPT 390 will be disappearing

   and the last offering of it, either in CMPT or as a Special Topics

   course in ENSC, will be in 99-1. After 99-1, ENSC 390 will be fully

   replaced by ENSC 350, which will require ENSC 151-2 as a prerequisite

   (and which will only be offered in the Fall).

   <p>

   What this means is:

   <ol>

      <li> If you have taken CMPT 105 and you miss the last offering

           of CMPT 290, then you will have to take ENSC 150;

           however, if you want to take CMPT 390 after 99-1, then

           you will need to take ENSC 350 instead, which will require

           ENSC 151 as well.

      <li> If you are a first year student who took CMPT 098 in

           96-3, then you are behind in the Computing sequence and

           you have the following options:

          <ul>

            <li> You can take CMPT 105 in 97-2 and then CMPT 290

                 in 97-3 with the rest of your class (this is the best

                 option).

            <li> If you plan to go into either the Systems or Physics

                 options, then you can take ENSC/CMPT 150 in 97-3 and then

                 ENSC/CMPT 250 in 98-1 (or another semester).

            <li> If you plan to go into either the Electronics or Computer

                 options (which require CMPT 390),

                 then you should take ENSC/CMPT 150 in 97-3 and then

                 ENSC/CMPT 250 in 98-1 (or another semester); however, you

                 must also be careful that you take CMPT 390

                 (or an ENSC Special Topics equivalent) by 99-1.

          </ul>

   </ol>

       
  <p>

  <li> 

  CMPT 361 has replaced CMPT 351 as a valid ENSC elective in

  the Systems option.<P>

  <li>

  Please be careful about defering your thesis if you plan to go to

  graduate school. A defered thesis will seriously affect your GPA and

  you will have to explain this to the schools that you apply to.

<br><br>

  <li> PHIL 001 will count as a "general" Complementary Studies

  elective provided that it was taken PRIOR to 95-2. 

<br><br>

  <li> CMPT will no longer be offering CMPT 205. This course should be 

   replaced by MACM 201 if you are following the 95/96 or the 96/97

   calendar and by MACM 101 otherwise.

<br><br>

  <li> Please check the web pages for up-to-date lists of pre-approved

       <a href="/undergrad/courses/electives/complementary.html">

       Complementary Studies</a> and 

      <a href="/undergrad/courses/electives/science.html">Science</a>

      electives.

<br><br>

  <li> There are quite a few scheduling changes this year,

       especially for MATH courses (this may affect your planning).

<br><br>

  <li> The ENSC 10x courses have become 101,102,204,203,305,306,407,409

   (yes, we know that 204 and 203 are out of sequence - there was an

   error made in the prep. of the calendar).

</ul>

<br>

<h3>Program Advice: 99-3</h3>

<br>

<ul>

  <li> <img src="/fas-info/images/new.t.gif"> For students in the computer

     engineering option under the old  program (before 97), ENSC 450

     will be offered in 2000-1 as a substitute for CMPT 400. Please make

     every effort to take it. This would be the last substitute offering

     for CMPT 400.

</ul>

<h3>Program Advice: 98-3</h3>

<br>

<ul>

  <li> <img src="/fas-info/images/new.t.gif"> Please note that there are

     some mistakes in the 97-98 and 98-99 printed calendars.

<br>

     98-99 calendar: In semester eight of the Computer Engineering Option,

     ENSC-427 is wrongly listed as a required course. It SHOULD be Scie

     IV-3 fourth science elective (correctly stated on the web version).

<br>

     97-98 and 98-99 calendars: PHYS 355 and PHYS 332 are wrongly in

semseter seven. They SHOULD be in semester eight (correctly stated on the

web version).  PHYS 365 and 384 are wrongly in semester eight. They SHOULD

be in semester seven (correctly stated on the web version).

</ul>

<h3>Program Advice: 98-1</h3>

<br>

<ul>

  <li> The School has decided to again offer its own version of CMPT 391 as a

     Special Topics course in 98-1 (provided that there is sufficient

     enrollment). This course will be numbered ENSC 460-4 and students in

     the Computer or Electronics options can take EITHER ENSC 460 OR ENSC

     370 to fulfil their original CMPT 391 requirement. See Patrick Leung

     for more details.

    <br><br>

     Note that ENSC 460-4 is not a regular course, and that it may only

     be offered sporadically. ENSC 370-4 is the "long-term" replacement

     for CMPT 391-4.

</ul>

<h3>Program Advice: 97-3</h3>

<ul>

<li> <img src="/fas-info/images/new.t.gif">

     CMPT 290 has now filled up (as of July 28). If you could not register

     for this course, there are a few possible actions:

    <ul>

      <li> Try registering through telereg again and again throughout the

      summer. Particularly good times around Aug. 8, when deposits become

      non-refundable, and around Aug. 25, when the summer semester grades

      are downloaded and some students may be removed from the course.

      <li> Take this course in 98-1 (this will be the final offering).

      <li> Take CMPT/ENSC 150 instead, which will be offered both in 98-1

      and 98.2. See the note about CMPT 105 and CMPT 290 in the "General

      Advice" section for more info on what this means.

    </ul>

<li> 

     Andrew Rawicz will be offering his Biomedical Seminar course in 97-3

     under the number ENSC 460-3. If you are in the Biomedical Stream, you

     have permission to count this as 3/4 of an ENSC technical

     elective. The missing 1-credit will have to be made up elsewhere.

     This course can also count as one of your two upper division courses in

     the biomedical area.

    <p>

<li> 

    Albert Leung will be offering ENSC 493-3 "Semicustom Integrated

    Circuit Design and Fabrication" in the 97-3 semester. This course

    is an "approved" elective for all options;however, in order

    for it to count as a full 4-credit technical elective, you must also

    take the companion ENSC 491-1 "theory" course.

    <p>

    Those students who have taken this course as ENSC 493-3 in the past can

    also take ENSC 491-1 to "top up" the course to a full elective.

    <p>

<li> 

     CMPT 400 will not be offered in 97-3; however, according to the Fall

     '97 course guide, it is scheduled for 98-1. If, for some reason, this

     course is not offered in 98-1, then we will find a replacement for

     students in the Computer Engineering option.

    <p>

<li> 

     ENSC 310, now ENSC 230, will not be offered in 97-3 (the next offering

     will be in 98-3). Since this is a

     required course, students in the Systems option have permission to

     replace ENSC 230/310 with PHYS 211-3. This replacement is valid for

     97-3 only (and you don't need to take an extra credit).

    <p>

<li> ENSC 494-4 "Semicustom Integrated Circuit  Design and Fabrication" is

     approved as an ENSC technical elective in all four of the options.

 </ul>

<h3>Program Advice: 97-1</h3>


<ul>

  <li>ENSC 461-4: "Photonics and Laser Applications

      in Engineering" is an acceptable ENSC elective in all 4 of our options.

   <br><br> 

  <li> 

     CMPT will be offering CMPT 400 again in 97-3; however, the class will

     not be run unless a minimum of 12 students are enrolled.

<br><br>

  <li> 

     CMPT will be offering a Special Topics course in 97-1 called

     CMPT 499-3 "Special Topics in Computer Hardware" that will be taught

     by Rick Hobson (enrollment permitting).

     Students in the Computer Engineering

     option have permission to take this course as a replacement

     for their CMPT 400 requirment. Details can be found in

     the following

     <a href="vlsicd.ps">postscript description of CMPT 499-3</a>.

      <br><br>

  <li> 

     The School has decided to again offer its own version of CMPT 391 as a

     Special Topics course in 97-1 (provided that there is sufficient

     enrollment). This course will be numbered ENSC 460-4 and students in

     the Computer or Electronics options can take EITHER ENSC 460 OR ENSC

  <li> ENSC 382 and ENSC 280 are being replaced by ENSC 281 and ENSC 381

   respectively (the courses are being switched). This means that

   those students who have already taken ENSC 280 should take

   ENSC 281 this Spring. The ENSC 281 that will be offered

   in 97-2 is intended for students who have not had ENSC 280.

   Note also that there is an error in the newsprint timetable - ENSC 381

   will not be offered in 97-2.

</ul>

<h3>Program Advice: 96-3</h3>


<ul>

<li> As of today (mid-September), we are still not sure when CMPT 400 will

     be offered next (for

     sure, it won't be this Fall).


     As a stop-gap measure, Engineering will allow students in the

     Computing Engineering option to take either CMPT 371-3 or ENSC 427-4

     as a replacement for CMPT 400-3 in 96-3 (this will change in

     subsequent semesters when we sort out the offering schedule for CMPT

     400-3 with Computing). Some additional details are:

<ul>

  <li> we believe that ENSC 427-4 is a much better course

       for Engineers than CMPT 371-3;

  <li> students who take CMPT 371-3 instead of CMPT 400-3 will not

       be able to take ENSC 427-4 for credit in subsequent semesters;

  <li> students who take ENSC 427-4 instead of CMPT 400-3 

       can use the extra credit as part of an ENSC elective

       (this will equal a full elective credit when taken in combination

       with a course like ENSC 493-3);

  <li> students who take ENSC 427-4 instead of CMPT 400-3 will

       not be able to take CMPT 371-3 as a subsequent CMPT elective;

  <li> students who have taken CMPT 371-3 prior to 96-3 may still take

       ENSC 427-4 as a replacement for CMPT 400-3 (or as a

       general ENSC elective).

</ul>
