EDA (electronic design automation) tools paved the way for the integration of billion of components in a single integrated circuit. However, many tools still rely on text interfaces. The use of visualizations tools can help not only to provide a visual output of an EDA tool but also to show how a tool is performing in terms of quality of results. A good graphic output can be useful to improve algorithms or develop new ones. The talk is illustrated with several examples, specially, some placement visualization tools are shown and it is provided a perspective how these visualization tools contributed to the improvement and development of new algorithms developed by our group.
Biography
Ricardo Reis received a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1978 and a PhD from Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (INPG), France, in 1983. He also received a Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Montpellier in 2016. Since 1979, he has been a Full Professor at UFRGS. He is also a Top Level Researcher (1A) of the CNPq (Brazilian National Science Foundation).
His research interests include Physical Design Automation, EDA, Radiation Hardened Circuits, VLSI Design, MPsoC and IoT. He has published more than 500 papers in various journals/conferences, and has been the author or editor of more than 20 books.
Dr. Reis is a recipient of various awards, including the researcher of the year by State Science Foundation (FAPERGS: Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul) in 2002, Silver Core Award from IFIP (International Federation of Information Processing), and the IEEE CASS Meritorious Service Award in 2015.
Dr Reis has served as the Former head of the Microelectronics Graduate Program and Computer Science Graduate Program at UFRGS, Past President of the Brazilian Computer Society and Past VP of the Brazilian Microelectronics Society, and Member of the Steering Committee of several conferences: VLSISoC, ICECS, LASCAS, NEWCAS, CASS R9School, IEEEISVLSI, SBCCI, IBERCHIP.
