Weighted fair queuing history
Fairness concepts:
- Bandwidth and buffer space are scarce commodities
- Protection from ill-behaved traffic sources
- Allocation of bandwidth and buffer space in a fair manner
- Fair allocation could be equal allocation or proportional allocation
- The EQM applies fairness to bandwidth only
First-come-first-served queuing:
- All packets directed into a single queue based on their arrival time
- Only works well when there is no congestion
- High traffic streams can easily starve low traffic streams by keeping the queue full
