Da Prez Sez I Bike!

By Morgan Chambers

Ah, summer semester ... a time of wearing shorts to class, EUSS barbeques and general kicking back. Of course there are the ever present assignments, quizzes, midterms, labs, and, for some of us, the T-word (Thesis). Somehow, though, I still manage to find plenty 'o time to putter around in the garden and cycle up to school. For the past 4.5 years I've been telling myself, "Next semester I'm gonna start biking to school." This semester I've actually started (mostly to justify the cost of my new bike), and in doing so joined a long line of cycling EUSS presidents. (However, I'm not nearly as dedicated or speedy as the past prezs.) Much to my amazement the trip up the hill isn't as bad as I thought it would be, and it gives me a feeling of accomplishment before my day even starts.

On to the meat of this article - which I'm sure you've already got an inkling of - Bicycles. Recently, Gary asked that we not park our bikes in the lab. The question came up, "Where the heck should we park our bikes?" The Kines bike rack is admittedly convenient but it fills up rather quickly on sunny days, and not everyone likes to strip their bike down to the frame before feeling safe about leaving it. Gary approached the university with the idea of installing a bike rack on the concrete patio outside the pit and, in a fit of kindness, the university didn't give an out and out "No". Instead, they replied, "Submit a proposal." So, your friendly EUSS is now in the process of writing up said proposal. We have two options open to us: (1) Buy a bike rack (2) Prove our engineering ability by designing one. If you have an idea for a bike rack that is easy to manufacture, relatively inexpensive to manufacture (and, ideally, could be made on the hill), and is spacially efficient ... come and see us.

This concludes this edition of The Prez Sez, now back to regularly scheduled lounging in the sun.
