"Intuition, Reason, and Desperation"

Morgan Chambers, EUSS Prez

They say that life goes in cycles, and here we are about to start the school year anew. Once again we have a batch of new faces who are full of enthusiasm and their outlooks unjaded.

I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome the new students to our program. You've probably already been told how exclusive the Engineering Science program at SFU is. A side effect of the exclusivity (and the small lab size) is that without undue effort you can get to know just about all of the undergrads. One great way to meet people is to take part in First Week (and lots of other EUSS sponsored events). The whole purpose of First Week is to introduce you to both senior students and the students in your year, so come out and get involved. One of the first orders up for the semester is to fill positions on the EUSS that have been vacated by people heading off for co-op. We need people for the following positions: VP Finance, VP Merchandise, VP External, and First Year Reps.

If you aren't interested in an elected position, we need people to sit on various committees and we are always looking for people who just want to volunteer their time.

(For example, we are hosting CEC'96, the Canadian Engineering Competition, this coming March and volunteers are desperately needed. Talk to Jason Krause or Gerry Larson if you're interested. --Ed.)

My Dad sent me down a book last semester and before I sign off, I'd like to share a quote from it:

"At the most marginal of opportunities, Jake was fond of telling anyone within earshot the three great secrets of how to proceed when you don't have the vaguest idea what you're doing. The secrets, in the order he invariably listed them, were intuition, reason, and desperation." - Jim Dodge from "Fup"

(It also contains the expression "knocked colder than absolute zero.") On that note, welcome (back) to Engineering Science!
