Da EUSS Prez, Re-elected
A Thank You Note

by Stephen Lam, Da Prez

Well, it is time for me to wrap up the semester with another inspiring Da Prez Sez, eh? Working together with a group of great VP's was a lot of fun this semester. And I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the VP's here. First of all, I would like to thank Garson Ho, our VP Events and my ever-so-funny JAPN-100 partner, for the fun-filled Applied Science Volleyball Tournament. Although I twisted my ankle in volleyball two days before the game (I hated myself for that because I waited for the whole semester to play), I still went as the team captain to cheer my team on. And even though our team didn't win, all the team-mates enjoyed themselves and had a lot of fun. In events like this, winning is not at all significant. The most important thing is to try your best and to have fun. And we tried our best and we had a lot of fun. As a side note: during the time I was walking funny, many asked me how was my ankle doing. And I would like to thank them for sharing with me the warm feeling of friendship. Okay, stop crying now Stephen. Next, a great round of applause to Erik Minty, our VP Publications, and his crew who pulled together three stellar issues of Enscquire (one of them was extra-thick too).

Now, you might ask, who else is there to thank? You see, the VP Events and the VP Publications seem to be the only VP's that are not under-appreciated. I would like to remind you that the other VP's work very hard all semester long to provide you all the services you enjoy daily. Like Bill Ressl said in his election campaign email: "the good VP's do such a good job that you don't even realize they exist." And it is so true. First of all, Kim Zipursky, our female first year rep, cleaned the lounge several times this semester because it was so messy. Shame on those who mess up the lounge and those who eat and/or drink in the lab! Rob Trost, our male first year rep and SFSS Forum rep, sits through all those long SFSS Forum meetings to ensure that the Engineering student body is represented. And the two first year reps have been very helpful in getting the first year students to participate in all the events. I am very happy to see that the first year students not only excel in their courses but also are very actively involved in the EUSS.

Next, John Harvey, our VP Electronic Communications and Capital Acquisition/Budget Committee Rep, has done a great job of looking after the WWW pages and getting us Pentiums. Kevin Maier, the VP Finance, is the one who had to bring more than $2000 in coins to the bank for deposit. It was HEAVY! Gordon Morrison, the VP University Affairs, keeps the lounge running and provides you the "Save The First Year Foundation." Keith Cheung, the VP External, organized the iron ring ceremony and promoted our school and Engineering in general on a live radio show. Kevin Henderson, the VP Merchandise, designed and ordered a new bunch of great-looking T-shirts that the EUSS will start to sell next semester. Isabel Ge, the co-VP Merchandise, ordered a new batch of EUSS pins and the leather jackets.

And please do not forget the bunch of non-VP volunteers (including all the EUSS non-executive committee members and those who are not in any official position) who help the EUSS in so many ways. Benjamin Ko helped me on the "Chinese Horoscope" article, and Frances Chan helped me on the "Chinese Animal Year Horoscope" article (she also helped Garson Ho in so many events). Kiyoshi Kuroiwa and Bill Ressl inspired me on academic issues (this is a tough one to explain, I think only those two know what I am talking about). Stephanie See, Brian Chan and Naomi Ko are running the election for the EUSS (when I was the internal, getting someone to volunteer to be the election officer was the most difficult task because it is another long-hours thankless job). And the Bio-Med students (in no particular order: Cheryl McDonald, Jessica Melin, Nina Takahashi, Drew MacDonald, Juliet Wyles and Bill Ressl [him again?]) who helped me to serve the students better.

Last but not the least by any measure, I have to say that the most under- appreciated position of all is the VP Internal. Simon Ng, the VP Internal and Pop Person, keeps the office running smoothly, takes the EUSS meeting minutes, makes sure you have newspapers and magazines to read, sells you printer cards, provides services like the pop machine and the exam files, etc. I distinctly remember Pete Helland (a grad student now) told me that VP Internal IS a completely thankless job. Well, now you have heard all the great stuff the EUSS volunteers (especially the behind-the-scene workers) do; I ask you kindly to thank all these volunteers for their time and effort that have contributed to the overall success of the EUSS. Next time you are in the lab, stop and think for a second all the hard work that the VP's and volunteers have put in. And thanks again for putting up with another of my Da Prez Sez!
