Engineers *Can* Play Volleyball!!!

by Garson Ho, VP Events

The Semesterly Applied Science Volleyball Tournament this semester was another great success. Thanks to Francis Lui (a Comp Sci, no less!) for his help in printing up some amazing posters and notices. And of course, the EUSS was instrumental in supplying the funding necessary to book the gym and buy the prizes.

This time, we had a grand total of 18 teams participating in the tournament _ more than any previous semester! And even after the registration deadline, there were at least two other teams that wanted to enter, but due to time constraints, they couldn't be fit in.

There were 10 teams entered in the Competitive Division and 8 in the Recreational Division. A total of 7 Engineering teams were entered, and most of them placed in the final standings. A strong showing was put on by Comp Sci as well, which fielded a total of 4 teams. Kines, as usual, put in a couple of very skilled teams.

Play started with round robin play amongst the teams in each of two pools in both the Recreational and Competitive Divisions, in the East and West gyms, respectively. At the end of the Round Robin, there was a three-way tie in one pool in each of the two divisions, so a decision came down to a matter of point-differentials during the round robin.

Four teams in each division advanced to the championship semi-finals, as well as four more teams advancing to the consolation semi-finals. All the playoff games were hard fought and exciting to watch, especially in the competitive division, where one game was decided in the third set by rally point.

At the end of the evening, the Competitive Championship was played for by two truly Applied Science teams, both of which had a mix of players from Comp Sci, Kines, and Engineering. The Recreational Championship was an all Engineering affair, as the "First Years", led by Brady Warnick, squared off against the "Grad-Geers", captained by Mark Charlebois. Eventually, the youthful energy of Brady's team (helped by the old bones of James Kerry) triumphed over the wisdom and experience of the Grads. The Consolation finals were won by Darryl's Kines team in the Comp. Div. (just barely beating out the Spiked Brew of yours truly), and by "Naomi's First Year" team in the Rec. Div. Honourable mention also goes to Fred Wu's team of "More Cheese, Please", which placed third in the Competitive Division, and Steve Lam's "Slam", which, in spite of being in the toughest division, put up a very valiant effort and had a great time!

After all the fun and games were over, most of the competitors headed to Fogg 'n' Sudds for some BEvERageS and munchies. I hope everyone had a great time at the tournament, and I look forward to seeing everyone come out to the next one! Please send any comments to me at gho@sfu.ca!
