The Stone Temple Pilots
Tiny Music, Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop
It seems that these hard rockers have come a long way in their
quest to find an alternative form to alternative music. Tiny
Music, their latest effort appears to be the culmination of
their experiments in hard-soft rock, which first began on their
sophomore effort, Purple. To say the least this music has
somewhat of a surrealistic touch to it, most evident on songs
such as 'Art School Girl', 'Adhesive' etc. Explaining or
comparing this effort in terms of the Pilots' previous efforts
is somewhat of a futile attempt simply because this new album
is in a completely different vein. But on its own merit it is
a good if not exceptionally excellent album. The music,
fortunately, still retains that rich quality inherent to most
bands that rely on good guitar riffs, solos and excellent drumming.
As for lyrics it would seem that the surreal feel of this album
has a lot to do with what it says rather than how it plays. A
definite must have for those of you who like 'weird' music.
Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories
Tails
This charismatic lady can be best described as Sarah McLachlan
without the loaded emotional baggage. Ms. Loeb's music pleases
the senses without enveloping the listener in emotion. Her
music varies from the playful and lighthearted to the inquisitive
and almost sad, yet in all this it is easy to notice the touch
of cynicism that seems to season almost every tune on this
album. What makes this album so interesting is not the music or
the lyrics but rather the tone/voice with which Ms. Loeb sings.
Rather than washing over the soul and engulfing the listener in
itself it slips into the psyche through the senses, like a smooth
liquor goes down the throat. Those of you who enjoy the likes of
Jann Arden should look into acquiring this album.
