This year, the students wrote the second Engineering Evaluation Exam. It could be summed up in a couple of words: it was tough. VERY.

The test consisted of 26 questions (give or take one depending on how the test was answered) and they had one hour to answer as many as possible. The test had questions varying in subjects from Math to Physics to Chemistry to Computing to Engineering. The test had a fair chunk of Miscellaneous "general" knowledge. Needless to say, these questions could be done by a student (maybe after 2nd year) in the time allotted, maybe except for the odd questions (What does Vancouver BC and French New Guinea have share in common? They are both equidistant from Montreal Quebec).

After I marked the tests (the hardest part of the test, I believe), we obtained stats about this years batch of 1st years:

  • They are very inventive (as shown in the "3 light bulb" question)
  • They are somewhat destructive
  • Some of the first years are artistic (the "water cycle" question)
  • 6/60 (10%) of the first years read and FOLLOW instructions (re-read the part d of the Op-amp question #25)
  • 8/60 (13%), of this 50% men and 50% women, know the REAL mistake in THE sentence.
  • 3/60 (5%) obtained negative status, as far as the test was concerned.
  • The majority isn't afraid of guessing on questions that had no penalty for wrong answers (as in the bonus question, which is GOOD)
  • The majority isn't afraid of guessing on questions that have penalties for wrong answers as well (as in the "operating system", which is BAD)

The mean score was 11.7 with a Std deviation of 9.37. The highest score was 43.6% (way to go Derek) and the lowest was -7.6% (Way to go ...um, well...we'll not mention any names). What does this mean? According to my bell curve mark, if anyone received a mark higher than -7.8%, you passed.

That was the test. The marks are posted outside the lounge and a key is available upon request. Hope the 1st years enjoyed writing the test as I did reading and marking it.
