a w(r)ecc experience

For those of you who spent January and February locked away in a Skinner box, WECC, the Western Engineering Conference and Competition, was held from the 28th of January through to the 1st of February. This year it was hosted by UBC, (you already know what the acronym stands for; I needn't discuss it further) with events taking place at Science World, the Hotel Drake, (on the lovely corner of Broadway and Nelson) and at UBC.

Preliminary events happened on Wednesday and Thursday, with teams representing western Canadian universities arriving at the Hotel. A few names were exchanged, drinking songs sung and industry tours taken, but the real action began on the Friday of the competition, when actual events began.

Because of the proximity of this year's WECC, SFU Engineering entered 16 competitors in the events. These 16 represented a broad cross-section of the talented here in Engineering. While booths displaying student creations crowded around the second floor of Science World, small groups of engineers were assembling coat hangers, string, saran wrap and Styrofoam cups in what they hoped would be a winning team design project. In one of Science World's amphitheaters, the loud exclamations of the debate competitors successfully drowned out the noise of the many elementary students at Science World.

Notable performances at WECC from SFU teams include: Cecil Lau and Sean Puttergil's infrared MiniDisc remote control device for the Entrepreneurial Design Category, Bill England and Scott Logie's debate performance and the Second Year Team Design Team of Derek Young, Fred Gharamani, Bryce Pasechnik, and Gillian Cleg.

Besides the competition, several formal banquets were held, as well as a concert with Spirit of the West performing to a small but raucous audience of 300.

WECC is an excellent opportunity for any engineering student to get out and meet engineers from other schools, consumer some beverages and have a good time. At the same time, our participation at events such as WECC increases SFU's visibility in the engineering community. When WECC time falls around next January, take the time to consider attending; the experience is well worth it.
