appsci volleyball rules and regulations

register | rules and regulations | photos

In accordance to the Intramural Volleyball Rules, some new rules will be added to the already existing ones.

  1. Each team must have a minimum of 2 AppSci members. For the purposes of this tournament, any student currently taking an ENSC, CMPT, KIN, CMNS, REM or SFU Surrey course is considered AppSci. Everyone else is considered non-AppSci.
  2. This is a co-ed tournament, so two (2) members of each gender must be on the court at all times. If a team is short a player, they must play with a ghost server (who can be male or female). However, that team must give up their serve upon the missing person's serve in rotation.
  3. Any person currently a member of any varsity volleyball team (SFU or otherwise) may participate in the competitive league only. Competitive league teams may only have one (1) such player. A maximum of two (2) former varsity volleyball players will be permitted on any one team.
  4. Once the tournament has begun, no more players may be added to the team roster. Players may not be "borrowed" from another team to "fill in" vacant positions.
  5. The tournament organizer reserves the right to filter teams out from the Recreational league, based on performance in past semesters.
  6. Calls are made on an honour basis. If any dispute regarding scoring or plays arises, the team captains of the teams involved will resolve the conflict in an orderly fashion.
  7. Defaults may occur for if one or both of the participating teams has too few eligible players to begin the game in the required time limit. Defaulting teams will receive a "default". If only one team is defaulted, the opposing team will be given a "win".
  8. All participants are expected to conduct themselves in sportsmanlike manner. Any swearing, profane language or fighting will result in a defaulted game by the offending team.

Point System

  1. 3 points will be awarded for each victory; 2 for each tie; 1 for a loss; and 0 for default (A tie occurs when the point difference between the two teams' game scores is within one).
  2. The reporting of scores and the clarification of any discrepancies in the scoring is the responsibility of each team captain. If score disputes are not resolved within 1 round of play, both teams will receive a score of 0, the equivalent of a defaulted game.
  3. For the Semi-finals and Finals: The team who wins 2 full games (15 points each) out of 3 wins the match. If time runs out before 3 games have been played, then the team with the 1 game won wins the match. If each team has won 1 game, then the team with the greater *TOTAL* number of points won in all 3 games wins the match (point difference must be greater than 1).
Tie-Breaking Scheme

The following format will be followed to advance tied teams from the round-robin play:

  1. The winner of the game(s) played between the tied teams will advance; if still tied,
  2. Point difference in games between tied teams decides; if still tied,
  3. Game results against any team(s) higher in the standings decide; if still tied,
  4. Point difference against any team(s) higher in the standings decides; if still tied,
  5. Game results against the next team lower in the standings decide; if still tied,
  6. Point difference against the next team lower in the standings decides; if still tied,
  7. Repeat with next team lower in the standings.
