The Western Engineering Conference and Competition is an annual event where engineering students from Western Canada get together to attend a few seminars and tours, and put their talents and projects up for judging in various categories. WECC is held at a different location each year, so the setting is always fresh and new, and the participating students have a great time.

WECC 99

The Western Engineering Competition and Conference for 1999 was hosted by the University of Saskatchewan school of Engineering in Saskatoon in early February. The event showcased over 60 competitors from school across western Canada, including five entrants from Simon Fraser University.

Natisha Joshi and Mark Boere entered the Extemporaneous Debate competition for the first time as a team and finished strongly in third place. Scott Logie and William England entered Debate also and successfully defended first place for the second straight year. Lastly, Josh Joshi entered his BrakeSense project (a system which detects the amount of wear experienced by automobile brake pads) into the Entrepreneurial Design category and finished in second place.

Even the frigid February weather in Saskatoon could not prevent the SFU contingent from finishing with impressive results at WECC '99 and all five competitors represented Simon Fraser University at the national level a month later.

WECC 98

We did extremely well this year! This year we sent

  • Bryce Pasechnik, Derek Young, Fred Ghahramani, Gillian Cleg (team design)
  • Terrence Yu, Aaron Kaiway, Greg Fung, JP Costales (team design)
  • Wyatt Cheng and Fred Gharhamani (extemporaneous debate)
  • Scott Logie and Bill England (extemporaneous debate)
  • Cecil Lau and Sean Puttergill (entrepreneurial design)
  • Mark Boere (entrepreneurial design)
  • Wyatt Cheng (explanatory communications)
  • Gigi Kwei (explanatory communications)
  • Kevin Cheng (corporate design)

Without a doubt, we showed the western collection of engineering schools how it's done! In Corporate Design, Kevin took 3rd place. Gigi claimed 2nd place in the Explanatory competition. Keeping in check with our entrepreneurial spirit, Cecil, Sean, and Mark managed a 1-2 finish (respectively)! In the debate, Wyatt and Fred came in 3rd, while Scott and Bill battled their way to the top. And of course, to top that off, Bryce Pasechnik, Derek Young, Fred Ghahramani, and Gillian Cleg claimed 3rd place in the team design!

In all, we took seven prizes (more than any other single university)! And in almost every category in which we competed, we placed. Well done, competitors!

WECC 97

We did pretty well this year! This year, we sent Kelly Fennig and Fred Gharhamani (debate), Scott Logie and Robert Trost (debate), Kevin Cheng (explanatory & editorial), Cecil Lau and Gigi Kwei (entrepreneurial design), Allan Dyck (corporate design), and Joel Harms (partying).

Allan won second prize plus a technical award, and went on to compete in CEC 97. Cecil and Gigi won 3rd prize plus part of a display award, and Fred and Kelly took 3rd place in their category.
