ensc maillist usage policies
All mailing lists on SFU are subject to the University's policy and
procedure on the fair use of information resources.
(http://www.sfu.ca/policies/general/gp24.htm) In addition to these guidelines, due to the large
subscription of ensc-student, the EUSS has approved the following guidelines and rules for ensc-student.
The aim is to help composers locate the proper audience, while minimizing the volume sent to uninterested parties.
guidelines:
- Ensure that any email sent to ensc-student is relevant to the majority
of the students on the list. If you have an email for a more specific
group you can use the following lists (all with @sfu.ca suffix):
- ensc-<year> lists for engineers beginning in the year specified:
ensc-95, ensc-96, ensc-97, ensc-98, ensc-2000, ensc-2001, ensc-2002
- ensc-help : for reporting computer related problems
- ensc-permjobs: Permanent job postings for ensc grads
- ensc-usedbooks: for selling and trading used books
- ensc-monitors: for contacting door monitors
- ensc-grad, ensc-alumni, ensc-women are self-explanatory
- If unsure whether your email is suitable for ensc-student take the time
to ask some advice from an older student or EUSS Executive. Remember that
many engineers hate spam and your reputation is at risk when sending
emails to such a large and influential body.
- Note that many rhetorical techniques such as sarcasm are not expressed
well over a text-only medium. You may offend someone unintentionally if
you are not careful.
rules regarding posts on ensc-student:
- As per SFU Policy GP 18
absolutely no harassment or discrimination of any form will be allowed on
any ensc mailing list. Please note that policy GP 18 includes provisions
for punishment including, if the case merits it, suspension or expulsion
from the University.
- Emailed "jokes" are often discriminatory in nature and thus are not allowed
under this policy.
- Wanted ads may be posted on ensc-student providing they fulfill the
following criteria:
- the purpose of the email and item wanted are clearly stated in the
subject line
- the item is a book related to coursework or technical equipment used in
the engineering field
- i.e. An ad for a HC12 EVB is acceptable but an ad for a executive desk
is not.
- For Sale ads may be posted on ensc-student for technical equipment
if the purpose of the email and item for sale are clearly stated in the
subject line. A maximum of 1 email may be made for an item for sale. If multiple items
are being offered simultaneously they should be included in a single email. Ads designed
to run a bidding process (i.e. an auction) are strictly forbidden.
- Book for sale ads are to be made on the ensc-usedbooks
mailing list, not ensc-student.
- Definitions:
Technical Equipment: tools, software or instruments used by engineers in
disciplines that SFU EnSc are involved in.
Please direct any questions, comments or suggestions to the current
VP Electronic Communications or the EUSS executive
