Once upon a time Dr. David Ryeburn handed out a class itinerary on the first day of class detailing all chapters to be read, assignments to be handed in and exams for the semester. From the first day on students knew exactly what was to be done and when it had to be completed by. The class itinerary is a small but significant tool that could be used to improve university life.

The quality of student life would be dramatically increased by informing students of the work ahead. Students could plan their busy lives accordingly and have no excuses (barring the exceptional) for not being able to plan their time properly. The quality of our education would be more consistent because different professors teaching the same class would be able to see the previous course structure and work load. Also, during curriculum reviews the content of the course and what was covered is transparent - just look at the class itinerary.

Preparing a class itinerary does not require any extra work for the professors since the course content and textbook are determined well in advance of the start of a semester. Why such a system is not already in place baffles me, but if I were a university administrator it would certainly be something that I would thoroughly investigate.
