presidential ponderings

As the summer semester comes to a close we are all looking forward to the few weeks that we have off to spend time on the beach or where ever you like to spend your time when the weather looks good.

Now in the middle of exams it might be hard to see that you really are almost done. So, when you come across an impossible question on either the 225 or the 429 final, just close your eyes for half a minute, take a break and think about where you will soon be. It tends to be detrimental to your grades if you stay in the day dream too long, so be careful with it.

Before long September will be here and new first year students to come along with it. New students means First Week. First Week is arguably our biggest and most exciting event of the year. With First Week, we all have an opportunity to relive the past. Be a group leader, or volunteer in some other way to make this year's Firstweek the best ever. You might want to be a team leader 'cause it is a lot of fun, but it is actually a great chance to work on leadership skills. You will be given a small group of possibly shy and timid first year students. It will be your job to bring them out of their shell and bond to make close friends for the next seven years of their lives while they complete their degrees, and some of them until they die (which is hopefully after First Week).

If this leadership task is starting too sound like too much work, let me remind you of a few factors that are working for you. First, tons of activities. The Midnight Madness organizers have already put in a bunch of time, and will put a bunch more to ensure that there will be lots to do the whole night. Secondly, you have the intoxicating effects of sleep deprivation on your side. Keep the young ones up long enough, and they can't help but have a good time.

Enjoy the rest of summer.
