Da Prez Sez -- Goodbye! (*sniff*)

The semester is drawing rapidly to a close and so is the present EUSS executive's term. A few members of the present executive are running for positions for next year. As for myself, I will be graduating as soon as I slay the thesis dragon, and then I will be moving on to other things (what they are, I have no idea!).

So this will probably be my last Prez Sez since a new president will have been elected by the time the next issue of Enscquire comes out -- I might as well let them have some practice at filling up this space. Without waxing too sentimental, I would just like to say thanks to everybody on the EUSS executive and to everybody else in SFU ENSC (faculty, staff, and students included) for a great year. Despite my requisite whining about how much time being president took, I enjoyed my term immensely and I learned a lot. But I couldn't have done anything without everybody's help, cooperation, and support.

The EUSS managed to accomplish a fair amount this year considering everything is done on volunteer time and everyone involved is taking a full load of courses as well:

We started in the 94-2 and managed to do all of our fund-raising from industry for the 1994-1995 fiscal year. We brought in the beer mugs, the shorts, new T-shirts, published three Enscquires, sent three representatives to the WESST retreat in Alberta, and said good-bye to Mary and Jim.

Then, in 94-3, we organized First Week, published another three Enscquires, and sent four people to CCES in Fredricton. We also raised, along with Computing, Kinesiology, and Communications, more than $1700 for Aids research during the Red Ribbon Campaign on World Aids Day. The semester-end dinner at the Lone Star Cafe was attended by more than 60 hungry fajita-eating engineers.

"...you'll be happy to know that you won't have to read any more of my propaganda anymore after this..."

This semester, the two large events were Opportunities Fair and Polar Plunge. During Polar Plunge, we raised a record $2331.00 which our three "non-dorks" (Kevin Henderson, Gerry Larson, and Steve Dick) presented on TV to the Variety Club. We sent representatives to WECC and CEC '95 and we have just recently set up a new award for Engineering Students administered by the university. All along, we have also been organizing shinny, selling pop for the best price on campus, selling printer cards, providing neat engineering merchandise, and keeping the normal EUSS services in the lab functional (i.e., Enscquire, student reps on committees, exam file, newspaper subscriptions, magazines, the student lounge, the microwave, the fridge, free student phone, etc.).

Over the next few weeks, we will be holding elections for next year's executive and a 25-person ENSC team has been organized by Garson Ho to compete in the Sun Run Corporate Division on April 30th against the Spectrum "ENSC Old-timers" team. In the meantime, stay tuned for details about the upcoming semester-end dinner. So that's about all I have to say -- you'll be happy to know that you won't have to read any more of my propaganda anymore after this (funny how being the EUSS President can turn someone who generally has a fairly cynical view of organizations into someone who runs around telling everybody what a great thing the EUSS is and how they should be actively involved!). Anyhow, good luck to next year's executive and good luck to all present and future engineering students at SFU. Keep it up!
