Apex Alpine Adventures Part III
The Adventure Home

by Kevin Cheng and Micheal Maruno

Day 3 Roll Call: Kevin, Maruno, Hoski, Hougee, Albert, Denise, Shirley, Jesse, Frances, Ben, Gigi and a whole buncha other people. The whole process has started to become routine. We wake up, eat breakfast, get ready and hit the slopes. Breakfast consisted of some delicious "egg biscuits" which were prepared by Albert, Denise and Shirley. Never failing to amaze us, the breakfast was late because Albert and company slept in.

As soon as the dishes were done, we made our way to the slopes. Some of us decided the previous day's adventure was more than enough and decided to stay behind and get a little rest and relaxation instead. As a warm up, we went down the Grandfather's Trail again. Naturally, Jesse and some other skiiers decided they'd warm up with a black diamond which branches off from the trail. But this proved to be a bad move as Jesse ended up doing a 10 point somersault landing with one ski against his shin.

Our next target was a blue slope which followed the ski lifts. Being the experienced skiiers that we were, wipe outs happened quite frequently and with great flair and elegance. Albert got quite intimate with one particular ski lift pole and decided he'd stay there, hugging the pole, for a few minutes. Jesse, following tradition, did another outstanding somersault and landed a good 10 feet from the point of take off but this little stunt proved to him that his shin was in far worse shape than he originally thought so he decided to take it easy for the rest of the day and return to home base. Hoski had his share of wipe outs on the slope and eventually gave up (with some expressive phrases) and came down part of the slope on his butt (after throwing his skis ahead of him). Around closing time, Ben, Gigi, Hoski and Hougee found themselves at the top of a slope. They attempted to go down through a short cut but ended up in a dark and narrow trail. Eventually, they were picked up by a snow mobile patrol and got a ride down.

We finally decided that we were bruised and tired enough to head back to the cabin and call it a day. On the way back, Ben and Gigi made a stop to get some liquor for the night's festivities. Our fajita dinner was prepared by the three Mikes (Hougee, Hoski and Maruno). Suffice it to say, it filled our stomachs and that was enough (we think the fact that chicken patty was used for the meat might have something to do with it).

This night turned out to be the most eventful. Probably because we wanted to rid ourselves of any excess junk food we'd purchased for the trip. The Mah Jong table was set up and we split ourselves into groups to help the beginner players (Jesse had his first experience of Mah Jong there and was required to learn the art of slamming the tiles onto the table rather than gently placing them there). During the game, we started drinking the rum, coolers and whatever else we had handy _ some more than others. Pretty soon, Hoski was barely managing a game of Mah Jong.....

But MJ can get boring really quickly with a lot of slow players and Simpsons re-runs was getting pretty tiring as well so we started to brainstorm for some silly games to play. Pretty soon, we found ourselves gathered in a circle, making up a story on the fly. The exact "rules" were: the person to the left of the storyteller will arbitrarily point to another person who will continue the story until the new left person points at someone else. This started out to be quite amusing but quickly went from a sick fantasy/science-fiction/comedy to a soap opera (A was having an affair with B who was the brother of C who liked A but doesn't feel the same about D as D does to C blah blah blah).

Noticing the absence of Ben and Gigi, we decided on our next attempt to relieve boredom. Minutes later, around 18 of us headed into their room in an attempt to take some incriminating pictures. They woke up just in time, though, so we settled for storming their room with the whole cabin group instead (the group picture shown in Part 1 is from their room).

Next on the agenda? Some of the other cabin people decided to demonstrate to us their psychic abilities. The trick involved person A choosing a card from some number of cards laid out on the floor while person B wasn't looking. Person C would then point to all the cards in any order or fashion and from this, person B can determine what card was picked. The claim, of course, was that persons B and C have a psychic link with each other. This trick baffled all of us for quite a while. Most of us simply gave up and went upstairs for more MJ. Others were more persistent and like the engineers they were, tried to think of some logical explanations.

Our next "event" was a suggestion from Frances: a game called "Honey, Do You Love Me?". The objective of the game was basically to make the other person laugh while attempting to seduce the person. If successful within 30 seconds, the seduced person is "it". You can imagine what kind of situations came up. Highlights include Albert making some very rude gestures about how large Hoski's private part was, Jesse practically French kissing Hoski's ear, Frances doing her best whiney sexually frustrated girl impression, and Kevin's pre-mature "time's up!" call to cause Hoski to laugh (finally).

Ending on such a note, we were all content to sleep off the rest of the night.....

Day 4 The breakfast crew was Frances, Jesse and Kevin and the "special of the day": Omelets and French Toast (MMmmmm French Toast). After breakfast, some people decided they'd go for some more last minute skiing. Our group decided that we'd had enough, though, and packed up our stuff. We vacuumed the living room and generally found some interesting items under the couches and in the little nook and crannies (one word: bugs). All in all, the whole process was rather uneventful and we soon found ourselves heading home with Maruno in the driver's seat. Frances took the shotgun seat and DJ'd for us with our supply of CDs (suffice it to say, we didn't get to hear most of the songs to the end). Hougee took over the driver's seat later and gave us an interesting ride (the details of which you'd have to ask one of us to find out).

We stopped by a White Spot in Chilliwack to have dinner and found ourselves sticking out like sore thumbs. We could feel the stares coming from the other patrons...

With the exception of more Hougee driving, our trip home was fairly boring. Most of us were just too exhausted and slept through the trip. We arrived at Albert's place (square one) and unpacked some of the stuff into his garage. From there on, we all went home and got a good night's rest (preparing for the partying that was to come in the next few days).
