CEC '96 at SFU: Beyond the realm of possibility? Never....

Jason Krause, CEC 96 Chair

That's right! SFU Engineering _ a school but ten years old and with no more than 250 undergraduates _ took on prestigous schools 10 times our size and won! We're hosting the 1996 Canadian Engineering Competition ... YIPPEEEEEE!!! In January, at the 1994 Canadian Congress of Engineering Students in Calgary, the EUSS submit-ted a bid to host the event and admist stiff competition (ahem!) came away successful!

More commonly referred to as CEC (pronounced "keck"), the competition is an annual event where participants from engineering schools across Canada come to compete in five events: Corporate Design _ working with a company to find the solution to a problem; Entrepreneurial Design _ designing a viable product not already available in Canada; Explanatory Communications _ explaining a complicated engineering problem or process to the general public; Editorial Communications _ presenting a socio-technical issue effecting engineers to-day; and Extemporaneous Debate _ spontaneous debates. Competition ent-ries are all of extremely high calibre as CEC participants must first place 1st or 2nd in their category at one of the re-gional competitions _ AEC (Atlantic), OEC (Ontario), QIC (Quebec), and WECC (West).

CEC is a completely student-organized event, and 1996 is no exception. There are TONS of opportunities for people to get involved organizing now _ everything from penny counting to graphic design _ and come time for the event, we are going to need everyone to help (literally ... CEC '94 in Toronto had 75-80 volunteers). Volunteering with CEC '96 is the perfect chance to gain valuable experience and, more importantly, solid resume material. CEC offers an incredible opportunity to showcase SFU within the Canadian private sector and university commun-ity. Let's work together to make it a success!!!

So if you're interested in helping with CEC '96 drop by our CEC office. It's right across the staircase from Steve Whitmore's office, in the upstairs lab. On the door is a list of people you can contact if you want to help out.

Also coming soon ... the CEC board! Down in the pit the CEC '96 organizing committee will be annexing half of the IEEE board ('scuse me, com-ing through!) for weekly updates as the countdown to CEC '96 continues. And for all you hard core computer geeks out there, check out the CEC '96 web page (courtesy of "Crispy" Chris Peake and John "VP Geek" Harvey) under the EUSS homepage.
