WESST Plans for the Future

Jeff Tilton, CCES 96 Delegate

One of the important parts of CCES are the regional meetings. For those of you that don't know, all engineering schools west of Ontario are part of an organization called WESST.

Because I was the only SFU delegate that managed to make it to all 4 meetings (they were usually held early in the morning) I feel compelled to make a report.

The first order of business was to elect a WESST representative to serve on the CFES executive. For the second year in a row Geoff "Puppy" Lester was chosen as our rep. If you don't know Puppy come and find me around the lab and I can show you a picture. After electing Puppy, the structure of the meetings were extremely informal and it is difficult to say exactly what was mandated (or should I say "person-dated") for the coming year.

A lot of discussion was put forward on the topic of a WESST charity event. It was decided that the best event would be a "pie-in-the-eye" week which would be co-ordinated with all WESST schools with the money going to a single charity. A "pie-in-the-eye" is an event where people pay $5 to buy a pie, which will be delivered into the eye of the person of their choice. When the engineering team finds the victim the victim has the option to either take the pie (in his/her eye) or pay $10 to send it to someone else. The pattern continues, with the pie price increasing $5 per person, until someone chooses not to redirect the pie. Most WESST schools already do an event similar to this and have found it quite common to have a pie redirected for upwards of $100! It was agreed upon that since many schools have already done an event similar to this year that the co-ordinated WESST event will be held next year shortly after CCES 97. The advantage of holding the event at several schools in the same week is that we should be able to get much broader media coverage and support for our efforts. A team was established to work on a plan of implementation and will give a progress report at WECC and a proposal at the WESST retreat in August.

Also on the agenda was the location of the WESST retreat. It was agreed that the retreat should be held in Alberta as this means that only those schools from Manitoba would have to fly. It was further decided upon to continue the tradition and hold the retreat in a "hole" apposed to a nice motel. Puppy agreed to work on a plan for the retreat and investigate the possibility of camping in southern Alberta. We will be further updated on the retreat at WECC and through the WESST-L mailing list.

Well that's it for significant discussions at the western regional meetings. The rest of the time was wasted throwing paper airplanes, discussing DASTARD (Drink A Small Town in Alberta Really Dry), and talking about regional rivalries. If anyone would like to know more about WESST they can visit the doghouse (Puppy's homepage) at http://www.ucalgary.ca/~gclester.
