The ESSEF (Engineering Student Society Endowment Fund) Funding Council met on January 29 to review the proposals we received, and allocate money for those proposals which fell within our funding guidelines. The funding council, which was chaired by Sean Donovan, also consisted of myself (incoming VP University Affairs), Jennifer Overington(Student Rep.), Bill Ressl(Alumni Rep.), and Andrew Rawicz(Faculty Rep.).

Because no proposals were received for the Entrepreneurial or Misc. categories, the money originally allocated for those categories was reallocated to the Competition and Class Project categories. We received a large number of proposals in the Class Project category this semester, mainly because it is an ENSC 370/460 semester.

After some initial discussion, we managed to work out a fair and equitable method of determining which proposals should be considered for funding. Because we only had $600 to distribute this semester, we were limited in the number of projects which we could fund. There were many good proposals, and we were forced to make several tough decisions. In the end, the following teams were funded in the competition category: The Mirosot team, and the Robo Wars team. Also the following class projects received funding: Brainwave, Break Wear, AVI, Blindspot, and Myotrainer.

Congratulations to the groups which were funded, we were very impressed by your projects and proposals. For those groups who didn’t get funded, there were a couple of reasons why we rejected proposals. The main reason was that we could only fund a limited number of proposals, so we took the top n proposals, and those were the groups which were funded. Another reason why proposals were rejected was that certain proposals did not have enough effort put into them. People should keep this in mind for the future. When you submit a proposal for anything, you are trying to sell yourself and your project. The more effort you put into your proposal the better. We will be revising the proposal in the future to make the proposal process more user friendly.

For the Summer semester, we have another $600 to distribute. I hope that we will receive many proposals; we really do want to give this money away, just give us an excuse.
