inside the school of engineering

I recently sent out a request for help from the engineering students. Perhaps some of you remember, I was working on my ENSC 370 project and decided that a letter needed to be sent to France. Unfortunately, no one in our group could speak French to any reasonable level at all. My plea went out to the students in hopes that maybe someone would respond and help us out.

To my joy there were four replies within the first hour, and about another ten that day. Everyone was quite willing to help. Even if this were an isolated incident I would have been proud to call myself an SFU engineer.

But nothing could be farther from the truth. It is difficult to make it from one end of the pit to the other without noticing one student helping another. Even at two o'clock in the morning help is often only a few steps away.

This is what separates us from other faculties. Here in engineering everyone is on the same team.

Lately school spirit has been brought in to question. And while it is true, that there is less cheering about SFU Engineering than there once was, a more silent pride in who we are still exists. It is by tapping into this pride, and bringing it to the surface that he energetic school spirit that was once here has already begun to return. I am confident that soon we will reach the level of enthusiasm we once had.

In the words of physics professor Dr. A. Arrott commenting on the performance of engineers in his PHYS 121 class.

"The reason engineers do so well in this class,
is that they stick together."
