The Departmental policy
is that all students are normally allowed to replace one of their ENSC technical
electives by either a Directed Studies or a Special Project Lab course.
In all cases, these courses must all be approved by the UCC Chair before
they can be counted. Here is what we normally require for these courses:
- an intellectual level equivalent to that of our other 400-level courses;
- a well defined syllabus/project
- a well defined set of deliverables, which would usually include a
selection of the following items:
- a working proto-type
- a set of completed assignments
- an interim report
- a final report
- an oral presentation
- a final examination
- a scheme for weighting the deliverables in the computation of the
final grade.
These issues must be sorted out and presented to the UCC Chair in a course
proposal that includes the following form before
the course can be approved. This form should be used as a cover sheet with for the proposal. It is expected that each proposal will contain
the following information:
For Directed Studies courses
- motivation for why the topic is of interest (and some technical background
if it the course is focused on solving a specific problem)
- a description of what is to be done and learned in the course
- a list of the major reference material to be used
- a description of the deliverables and the grading scheme
For Special Project Lab courses
- motivation for why the project is interesting and useful
- background material
- functional specifications
- description of the deliverables and the grading scheme
Proposals must be received and approved by the UCC Chair prior to the end
of the first week of classes to be eligible for a given semester. Upon
completion of the course, copies of the paper deliverables must be
filed with the UCC Chair; failure to do so may result in the course
being disallowed as an approved course. |
