Purpose
of the Endowment
The
Engineering Science Student Endowment Fund was established at Simon Fraser
University in 1997 to honor, encourage and improve Undergraduate Engineering
Science education. The Endowment Fund provides support for the Engineering
Science Undergraduate Student Project Award.
Terms of Reference of Engineering
Science Undergraduate Student Project Award
The Engineering Science Undergraduate
Student Project Awards may be given annually for projects proposed by
SFU Engineering Science undergraduate students. The project proposals
submitted for consideration should contain a description of the project,
Category as noted below, the benefits to Engineering Science students,
the university or to industry, an implementation schedule including a
deadline and a contact student with a valid student number, and a complete
cost breakdown.
The project can fall into one of four (4) Categories
that will be ranked according to the Rating Criteria (first Criteria being
the highest).
Category A - Competition

Projects that will be entered to compete in a competition

Rating Criteria: within the scope of SFU Engineering Science, ambitious,
team oriented, scientific merit
- 30%
of total available funding will be allocated to Category A
- Awards
will include travel costs associated with competition participation
Category
B - Entrepreneurial
-
Projects that expect to produce a workable prototype. A brief Business
Plan should be included in the project proposal.
- Rating
Criteria: pragmatic, cost effective, visionary
- 30%
of total available funding will be allocated to Category B
Category
C - Class
-
Projects that originate from an Engineering Science class or a special
projects laboratory
- Rating
Criteria: originality, usability, team oriented
- 25%
of total available funding will be allocated to Category C
Category
D - Miscellaneous
-
Travel and Projects not covered under Category A through C and/or purchase
of Lab Equipment and/or teaching aids
- Rating
Criteria: educational, promote SFU Engineering Science
- 15%
of total available funding will be allocated to Category D.
Each
semester, the Funding Council will inform the School of Engineering Science
students of the existence of the Awards, and will invite project proposals
to be considered for the Awards by the end of the third (3) week of classes.
At
the discretion of the Funding Council, a member of the Funding Council
will inspect the Projects allocated funds in all Categories on or before
the deadline date outlined in the proposal.
Adjudication
and Administration of the Awards
The responsibility for selecting proposals to be
funded will be vested in the Engineering Undergraduate Student Society
Funding Council.
The Funding Council will consist of five persons
who must be a minimum of 18 years of age and if a student, in second year
Engineering Science or greater:

Three (3) students elected to the Funding Council who will include:
- One
(1) Chair of the Funding Council
- One
(1) student elected from the Engineering Science undergraduate student
body, alternately a V.P. from the Engineering Undergraduate Student
Society (except the V.P. Finance of the EUSS)
- One
(1) Vice President Finance of the EUSS
- One
(1) School of Engineering Science Faculty member appointed by the Director
of the School of Engineering Science
- One
(1) Engineering Science Alumni representative appointed by the Director
of the School of Engineering Science
A
minimum of three members, including the Chair, will constitute a quorum.
Faculty and Alumni members are to serve staggered two-year terms; all
others one-year terms. Members of the Council may be reappointed and cannot
submit their own proposals while serving on the Funding Council.
Once the Funding Council has determined the winning
proposals, the Chair of the Funding Council will present and discuss the
winning proposals with the Director, School of Engineering Science who
will have final proposal approval. The Engineering Science Undergraduate
Student Project Awards will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards
Adjudication Committee on the nominations of the Funding Council and the
Director of the School of Engineering Science.
If there is left over funding from any Category in
any given semester, the funds may be redistributed to other Categories
at the discretion of the Funding Council. If there are no suitable candidates
in any Category, the Funding Council may decide not to grant an Award
and the funds will be recapitalized in the Endowment.
All equipment and software purchased by funds from
the Award will become the property of the School of Engineering Science.
Any funds not used by students in a project granted an Engineering Science
Undergraduate Student Proposal Award will be returned to the Endowment
Fund.
Fund Administration
The Engineering Science Student Endowment Fund will
be held by Simon Fraser University. The fund administrator will be the
Director, Student Academic Resources who will act on the nominations and
recommendations of the Funding Council and the Director, School of Engineering
Science.
The capital of the Endowment Fund will be held in
perpetuity. A portion of the interest earned on the Endowment will be
used each year to support the Engineering Science Undergraduate Student
Proposal Awards. The remaining income will be reinvested in the Endowment
Fund to maintain its value over time.
In the event that circumstances make the specified
use of the Endowment Fund no longer practicable or desirable, the Board
of Governors of Simon Fraser University is hereby authorized to make any
changes it may deem necessary in the terms or use of the Endowment Fund
or the Engineering Science Undergraduate Student Proposal Award, such
changes, however, to be in keeping as far as possible with the original
spirit and general intent of the Endowment Fund.
