INTEGRATED UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE PROGRAM

The School of Engineering Science has introduced an integrated undergraduate/graduate program which should result in the award of an MASc degree one year following the BASc. All academic requirements for both degrees are met separately.

An integrated BASc/MASc program has several attractions. Students of the calibre of those in Engineering Science should not be content to stop at the BASc level, nor is an undergraduate program adequate preparation in fields such as communications, electronics and automation. Yet time and money are in limited supply. Through the close association of the bachelor's and master's theses, the integration of course options, and the earlier focus on the area of specialization, the joint program offers a very effective approach to graduate study.

All regulations for the two degrees apply. As well, the following should be noted:

  1. A student intending to pursue the integrated program makes application to the School preferably in the semester in which his or her accumulated semester-hours of credit exceeds 120. The application identifies the thesis area, the proposed senior supervisor and the intended program (courses and timing) to satisfy both degree requirements. This application constitutes a commitment to complete the integrated program. Later applications may be accepted but some of the benefits of the joint program will be lost.
  2. The integrated program requires the completion of the undergraduate degree program prior to formal acceptance into the graduate program and the satisfaction of all requirements for both the BASc and MASc separately and distinctly. However, where appropriate, graduate courses can substitute for undergraduate electives.
  3. The undergraduate thesis work (ENSC 498 and 499) is devoted to preparation of a detailed proposal for the MASc thesis, and acceptance of the undergraduate thesis constitutes acceptance of the MASc thesis proposal incorporated therein.
  4. On completion of the BASc requirements, the student formally enters the MASc program. He or she then fulfills the graduate course and thesis requirements.
  5. Financial support is available from the time the student entered the integrated program. This would be composed, where appropriate, of teaching assistantships, research assistantships and both graduate and undergraduate scholarships.
